Cathedral School For Boys

One of several projects for the Cathedral School for Boys, the remodel involved the construction of a new classroom building between the original 1960s school building and the historic Grace Cathedral. The existing school facility required earth shoring before excavation for the new classrooms. The scope also included expanding and renovating the school’s two entrances, remodeling the administration offices, and expanding the library.

The design required an extensive exiting study to ensure the school, chapter house, and cathedral remained safe. The work was performed in phases to allow the school to remain open during construction,

A Unique Site

The classroom addition is situated between the existing school and the Cathedral on the only remaining piece of ground on the Historic Block.

Construction access was limited to a narrow gap between the two, allowing only three inches on either side of the excavator entering the site. Once the 18-foot excavation and underpinning were complete, the excavator had to be craned over the Cathedral.
